Breakthrough II Fund launched to support more social enterprises
CAN and Permira launched Breakthrough II, their second social investment fund, to invest more support in a greater number of social enterprises, on 30th October 2007.
The Breakthrough initiative is a pioneering two-year social investment programme set-up and run by CAN and private equity firm Permira. Launched in 2005, the initiative is designed to tackle the financial and management challenges inhibiting the growth of Social Enterprise.
The launched followed CAN's Scaling up Social Enterprise event which brought together leading social entrepreneurs, commerical business and policy makers.
The results of the pilot Breakthrough I Fund revealed that most social enterprises will struggle to scale-up from start-up stage. It was these specific barriers identified that Breakthrough was set up to address. For more information on the findings, please see the press release - 29th October 2006 - Breakthrough Tackling Social Enterprises' Struggle to Scale-up.
