Breakthrough's latest social enterprise FareShare's mission is to support communities to relieve food poverty.

It was founded by the homeless charity Crisis in response to growing concerns about food poverty and food surplus of major high street food sellers.

Today FareShare works with food manufacturers and distributors like Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer, Kraft and Tesco.

This lack of a healthy diet, combined with the other hardships such as homelessness impairs the immune system and leaves people vulnerable to ill health. Poor health has a significant impact on homeless people with an average lifespan of just 42 years compared to the national average of 74 years.

Why selected for Breakthrough:

FareShare has an incredible social impact record. Last year, FareShare helped businesses to reduce their C02 emissions by 13,000 tonnes and diverted 2,000 tonnes of quality food from landfill. This contributed to over 3.3 million meals to 16,000 disadvantaged people each day. FareShare also provided 270 work and volunteer placements whilst helping  local charities save and reinvest  £5 million.
