Getting pally in ‘social enterprise alley'

23rd June 2010 - The Social Enterprise Coalition, the UK's national body for social enterprise, has moved from its South London offices to join one of London's most thriving Third Sector clusters - CAN Mezzanine. The office move into the East Road building in London N1 - dubbed ‘social enterprise alley' by the Coalition's Chief Executive Peter  Holbrook - was a deliberate decision to facilitate the opportunity to be located at the heart of the social enterprise community.

Social Enterprise Coalition Chief Executive Peter Holbrook says:

"The Social Enterprise Coalition moved its offices to CAN Mezzanine in order to be a part of a social enterprise community and we are thrilled to be here. CAN are pioneers in the social enterprise movement and we have always worked closely with them. Now that we're even more strongly connected I look forward to working with CAN on lots of exciting new ventures going forward. A bonus is being surrounded by some fantastically inspiring social enterprises and charities and to be putting our rent costs back into the movement."

The Social Enterprise Coalition represents a wide range of social enterprises, support networks and related organisations. It also provides know-how and training materials, advises government, hosts events and undertakes research.

CAN (formerly Community Action Network) works with charities and social enterprises by helping them to scale up their business. Through CAN Invest, CAN Engage and CAN Advise it provides help with investment, strategic business support and advice on property. CAN Mezzanine - its own social enterprise - provides office space to over 120 Third Sector organisations in its three central  London buildings. Charities and social enterprises in the East Road building (off Old Street) include the Institute for Learning, the Network of Black Professionals, the Development Trust Association, WRVS  and victim support charity Why Me?

CAN Chief Executive Andrew Croft says:

"The Social Enterprise Coalition has huge strengths in policy, research and profiling the best of the social enterprise movement. CAN has strengths in business development and helping organisations to maximise and measure their social impact. Together we can help to raise awareness of the vital role of social enterprises to communities and the nation's economy. "
